And the pair that we are gonna check out are the brand new Razer Blackshark V2 and V2 X. These are two different gaming headsets that have a lot of similarities but there are some differences here and there.
To start with, the price. The price on the Blackshark V2 X comes in at $59 where this is more of a base model.
Then the regular V2 comes in at $99 where it adds a USB sound card that is giving you THX Certification which opens up a sound a little bit more and sounds really impressive when it comes to games and movies.
Design - Razer Blackshark V2 and Razer Blackshark V2 X
Now as far as the design itself, the original Razer Blackshark is one of the most obnoxious looking gaming headsets we had ever seen.
So, we were kind of surprised that they were even bringing these back. But it is a lot more subtle looking now.
It still has that aviator type look that the original ones had but it looks like a normal gaming headset.
And then really from outside, there is no difference when it comes to the design.
These both gaming headsets have the exposed cable which we are not a huge fan of that goes between the ear cups and the headband itself.
The reason we are not a fan of that is if you are wearing these and something just happens to clip them or catch them if you take them off and something damages that.
Basically makes it where your headset is just not usable.
Logo - Razer Blackshark V2 and Razer Blackshark V2 X
Another difference between the Razer Blackshark V2 and Razer Blackshark V2 X is that on the base model V2 X, the logo is basically black. It just kind of blends in with the ear cup and it gives it a more generic look overall.
Whereas the Razer Blackshark V2, the logo has Razer’s typical neon green and it just stands out a little bit more.
Microphone - Razer Blackshark V2 and Razer Blackshark V2 X
Now, outside of that, the microphone being used on both of these is essentially the same microphone.
Both versions are using Razer’s Hyperclear Cardioid Mic and we think that this is a very good microphone. Especially given the price that these gaming headsets fall under.
But on the Razer Blackshark V2, the microphone is removable whereas on the Razer Blackshark V2 X, it’s non-removable.
So, if you like to use your gaming headset kind of like a normal headphone and don’t wanna have that cable attached all the time, that is something you might wanna look at the Razer Blackshark V2 for.
We did a mic test on both the Razer Blackshark V2 and V2 X, and on the Razer Blackshark V2, it picks up the voice very well which was on a normal profile and we haven’t done anything to enhance it.
On the Razer Blackshark V2, the microphone sounds we actually prefer. The sound that was coming out feels a little bit cleaner.
And we don’t know if it is because it is not going through a USB sound card. So, there is no kind of digital interference.
Comfort - Razer Blackshark V2 and Razer Blackshark V2 X
Now as far as some of the differences between the two, we will say that the material that is being used on the ear cups and on the headband, on the V2 you have kind of fabric material.
It’s a lot more breathable. So, if you are somebody that games for longer periods of time, we would probably lean you in that direction.
Where the V2 X is using a Pleather type material and we did notice after gaming for a little while, it got a little bit warm. It was just more comfortable for us to use the regular V2.
Now, both of these best gaming headsets are extremely comfortable and fit really well over your ears.
They both are using memory foam. So, it just is a very light headphone for gaming that you still can wear for long periods of time.
The main difference between both of these gaming headsets for PC is that they both have a 3.5-millimetre connection as far as the cable goes but the regular V2 is giving you a USB sound card.
This sound card does open up a little more opportunities because you have the ability to use Razer’s Synapse Software.
Now, that is only if you are going to be using them on PC but it allows you to use different EQ settings.
There are even presets built for certain games and you even have different audio controls over the mic itself.
So, we find that it adds quite a bit of value if you use the Razer Blackshark V2.
Cables - Razer Blackshark V2 and Razer Blackshark V2 X
Speaking of the cable, this is where there is another difference. On the regular V2 X, you have basically like a rubber cable/silicone type material cable.
Where on the Blackshark V2, you have a nice braided fabric material. So, it definitely feels more premium.
Sound - Blackshark V2 and Blackshark V2 X
Now, let’s talk about the sound. The sound of these gaming headphones definitely kind of steer away from other Razer gaming headsets that we have tried in the past.
To start with, both of these have 50-millimetre drivers but the regular V2 is using Titanium drivers. And we did notice a little bit of sound difference when it comes to the V2.
Where most of them have that boomier sound, it’s a warmer tone and sometimes can get muddy depending on what you are listening to.
The Razer Blackshark V2 and Razer Blackshark V2 X gaming headsets are more focused on the mids and the highs.
And these focus a lot more on clarity. If you are somebody that games a lot, you will know how important that is because it picks apart dialogue a lot easier.
You can definitely hear footsteps a lot easier when your mids are more focused and the bass is just toned down to the point where you can still feel it.
But it just doesn’t have that overwhelming impact that other Razer headsets have had. So, if you are more of a fan of having that really boomy bass, this is probably gonna leave you a little underwhelmed.
But if you are somebody that likes to hear every subtle sound which is kind of what we like especially when gaming.
Another thing that these were good at is listening to movies. Just again the focus on dialogue, you are hearing everything a lot clearer and it just sounds really natural.
Now as far as the sound difference between the V2 and V2 X, we will say that having that sound card on the regular V2 definitely opened up the sound a little bit more.
It felt like you were in a much wider environment and to us, it just felt a little more natural.
Where the Razer Blackshark V2 X just kind of had more of a stereo feel to it. It still sounded great but it just wasn’t as open as the Razer Blackshark V2.
So, in our opinion, it’s worth the $40 difference looking at the Razer Blackshark V2 instead of the Razer Blackshark V2 X.
But we can still say that both of them are very good for the price.
However, we do wish that they had removable cables as we are just a huge fan of that because if something happens to the cable, it’s just easier to replace.
We are really not a fan of that exposed cable between the ear cups and the headband but it seems like most gaming headsets lean towards that design.
And then the only other thing that we think some people are going to want is just a little bit more boost in the bass.
Now, the Razer Blackshark V2 also allows you to use Razer software. So, you do have some different EQ options when it comes to that but we still notice that it doesn’t give you that really powerful bass that Razer is known for.
But outside of that, we think both of these are incredible values and we really like the sound card that comes in the Razer Blackshark V2 but we really like the sound that the Razer Blackshark V2 is giving you for that price.
So, for Razer to have both of these and have them under $100, we think it’s a very competitive market and we think Razer realizes that.
